Minnesota is the home of Hubert H Humphrey, Walter Mondale, Eugene J McCarthy, Don Fraser, Paul Wellstone, and Bruce Vento. They have represented a strong social-democratic tradition serving as a foundation for a politics of common sense and compassion. For many years even the Republicans have produced politicians who in other states would have been Democrats, such as Governors Elmer Anderson and Arnie Carlson, Senators David Durenberger and Rudy Boschwitz. This is the natural politics of a State which leads the nation in tolerance, education and social policy.
Michelle Bachmann is an anomaly. And although Bachmann survived a very strong challenge from Jim Graves, the State reclaimed its natural role in yesterday’s election. The Democratic Farmer-Labor Party* captured both houses of the State Legislature and 5 of the 8 Congressional seats. This complements the existing DFL office-holders who possess both U.S. Senate seats, the Governorship and the state offices of the Secretary of State, the Attorney General and the State Auditor.
God is in His Heaven and all is right with the world.
* The Minnesota affiliate of the Democratic Party is the result of a merger of the state Democratic Party and the homegrown radical party the Farmer-Labor Party.
