Bertha von Suttner was a friend of Alfred Nobel. Bertha, a peace activist, persuaded her friend, Alfred, to leave a portion of his estate to fund a Peace Prize which was to be awarded to someone who did the most, as noted in his will, “for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”
Indeed the Swedish Parliament enacted a law requiring that NOBEL PEACE PRIZES be awarded consistent with Nobel’s will for the benefit of those who contributed to world peace.
Bertha von Suttner went on to found the INTERNATIONAL PEACE BUREAU (IPB) with Nobel’s support.
The IPB is now protesting the Nobel Peace Prize Foundation’s award of the prize to the European Union holding that the EU is not a peacemaker and as such is not eligible for the prize. There has been considerable discussion of the Foundation’s earlier award to Barack Obama. Obama is a milestone-maker and upon his receipt of the award has made history by becoming the Peace Prize winner with the most “kills”. No other peace prize winner has racked up so many deaths after having received the Peace Prize.
We agree with the International Peace Bureau, a network of over 300 peace organizations worldwide, warmongers already get enough accolades, money and acknowledgement. Let us reserve the Peace Prize for peacemakers.
