“If the bee disappeared off the face of the earth, man would only have four years left to live.” ___ ALBERT EINSTEIN
Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), the problem that has destroyed 10 MILLION beehives and cost the Nation’s beekeepers over $ 2 BILLION, has puzzled many in the beekeeping and scientific pursuits. Recently a study conducted jointly by the University of Maryland and the U.S. Department of Agriculture has determined that a combo of pesticides and fungicides have so contaminated the pollen collected by the bees that the species itself is threatened.
It’s not a matter of isolating the offending chemical and banning it inasmuch 21 different chemicals are involved. When the bees ingest the toxic brew they are rendered susceptible to a parasite that quickly spreads throughout the hive killing all.
People don’t seem to understand that this does not merely mean we’ll have to substitute sugar syrup for honey, bees pollinate many, many food crops. If the bees die, crops will not be pollinated, and then won’t grow. Crops are those things on farms that are then magically wrapped in cellophane as food in the supermarket. No bees – No crops – No cellophane-wrapped food to buy.
But what the hell does Einstein know anyhow?
