Power Does Not Corrupt Men; Fools, However, If They Get Power, Corrupt Power

This is actually a re-working of GEORGE BERNARD SHAW’s retort to the famous Lord Acton quotation, “Power tends to corrupt. Absolute power corrupts absolutely”. Shaw wrote it as, “Power does not corrupt men; fools, however, if they get into a position of power, corrupt power.”

The Tea Party continually chants Acton but history does not bear them out. “Power” is but the capacity to do things. It can be the power to do good or the power to do evil. If one refrains from acting, it does not mean no one acts, it means others will. Bring this back to Earth, when the Teasers seek to restrain a Government from acting in the general interest it merely clears the deck so that the Kochs, or other One-Percenters, can act in their own interests.

The history of the past 20 years demonstrates the wisdom of Shaw, we’ve had fool after fool at the helm, and the ship of State was sailed in circles. Before this time, we had men who had power and knew how to exercise it: FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ and Nixon. These men, Democrat and Republican, used power to make us a better Nation. Since 1980, fools have flittered away our heritage, weakening us as a country and delivering our people as subjects to masters, domestic and foreign.
