Thomas Paine Day

Thomas Paine was born on this day in 1737*. Born an Englishman, he migrated to America and joined the American Revolution. Paine wrote the best-seller of the day “Common Sense” in which he argued the American case for independence. Later he moved to France where he served in the French National Assembly and supported the more moderate elements of the French Revolution.

* Paine was born on January 29, 1737, according to the “Old Calendar”  operative in England at the time. But this date becomes February 9 in the calendar we use today.

TOM PAINE: “I know not whether taxes are raised to fight wars, or wars are started in order to raise taxes.”

No matter what you may value, life or money, wars cost too much.
